Spalted Maple Bowls
Our American handcrafted oval wooden bowls are functional art pieces. The wood is sourced from fallen trees. Different types of wood gain different qualities as decomposition works its way into the grain. Maple, altered by aging and decomposition, is known as “spalted” maple. These bowls are heirloom pieces but are meant to be used, loved, and displayed when not in use. The bowls are food-safe and functional. They are dried down to 6% moisture. Each piece is treated with beeswax and mineral oil, for food safety and to keep the wood from drying out.
Please note: These are handcrafted, rustic pieces made from wood with highly variable character. Each bowl tells its own story, with unique characteristics that are not considered flaws. Please call the store if you'd like to see pictures of current stock on hand.
Care: Hand wash bowls with mild soap and water. Dry off with a towel. Do not place in the dishwasher or submerge in water. The bowls have a food-safe finish to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. We recommend that you apply mineral oil or other food-safe wood conditioner once a month (or whenever needed) to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and to help prevent the wood from being stained.
